Though professional lighting kits and equipment can often be costly and unwieldy for younger film students, there are a number of ways to cheaply and effectively light a scene while replicating the sense of atmosphere and emotion of a higher budget production. Once students understand basic lighting rules and conventions such as three-point lighting, they can recreate the effects they want using easily accessible materials like table lamps or Chinese paper lanterns and benefit from manipulating natural light to their own ends.
