The Fits is a narrative feature film that uses poetic imagery and metaphor to describe a girl’s experience of entering puberty. A class screening of the film may complement an Arts, African-American Studies, or Health curriculum, and will encourage students to consider the nuanced boundary between childhood and adulthood. Taught in conjunction with this guide, the film will challenge students to think critically about gendered group dynamics, fitting in, and the transition into adolescence. Discussion questions and supplemental materials facilitate further research into related topics such as African-American culture, dance and film aesthetics.
