To get started, create a profile, and reach out to members of the community by requesting a connection. Once you are connected, you will have the opportunity to share contact information. Develop your network by letting the community know who you are: create a robust profile, and share examples of your work via the discussion forums, the blog, and the lesson exchange.
In the FilmEd for Filmmakers section of our Curriculum Guide, we demystify the process of developing a successful educational outreach strategy. The articles contained in this section draw on the San Francisco Film Society’s 20+ years of bringing films to educational audiences. We hope you will use our experience to develop your own outreach strategy that matches your film’s goals, budget, and target audience.
The FilmEd. for Filmmakers guide offers insight toward success in the educational marketplace, strategy for reaching target demographics and guidelines for creating curricula that align with grade levels and learning standards. Our featured outreach strategies demonstrate the wide-ranging approaches that filmmakers have taken in crafting educational programs to promote topical learning and youth engagement, and to draw income and audience beyond the initial release period. We welcome your feedback and suggestions. If you would like to see something that isn’t here, or if an article was particularly useful, let us know via the Using FilmEd. discussion forum, or contact us directly by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
In the Filmmaker Resources section of the Lesson Exchange, we provide a worksheet to help you articulate outreach goals to match your project. If you have your own materials that have been useful in planning an educational program, feel free to use this space to share them with the community. In addition to the Filmmakers Resources, the range of curricular materials available through the Lesson Exchange may serve as useful examples to filmmakers and curriculum developers.
Filmmakers are encouraged to share their experiences and insights, and to ask questions of peers and educators in the Reaching an Educational Audience discussion forum. This space is like an informal curriculum guide. Let fellow filmmakers know what worked well for you, or ask for feedback on a new idea.
If you’ve had success in the educational space, you may want to write about it on our blog. Other filmmakers in the community may benefit from your experience, and you might find new audiences among educators and students.
Thank you for taking the time to explore the resources and the community at FilmEd. If you are interested in a consultation with SFFS Education staff and further assistance with curriculum development and educational outreach, please contact us at email@example.com to explore partnership options.
